Long ago and far away.......
The Captain and I did a cache called the Krugerrand Run (now archived) in March 2004. Our intentions were to make it an annual thing. The GC.com approver at the time was 9key, and he let us place the cache without requiring us to devulge the coordinates to the waypoints or to the final cache location. But by the time March 2005 rolled around, 9key had quit and we had to deal with PA. He would not let us do KR II the way we had done KR. He said someone at GC.com would have to know all the coordinates involved (no resting on your reputation allowed over there), so we declined to put the cache on GC.com.
So in May 2005 the Captain posted the Lost Krugerrand on the old Southeast Texas Geocachers Forum. Well, the old forum is gone, but the story and the coin are not. So it is being posted here. If you find yourself with a little too much time on your hands and somewhere in the vicinity of Baytown, Texas, you might want to go off on a little treasure hunting expedition!
There are many tales of hidden treasure of gold and silver in southeast Texas. Some of the more famous tale are THE LEGEND OF JOHN FLETCHER'S BURIED TREASURE, THE LEGEND OF PAVELL'S ISLAND, CRAZY BEN DOLLIVAR'S SECRET GOLD CACHE and LEGEND OF JOHN MCGAFFEY'S GOLD. I have always wondered what it would be like to find such a treasure and if you did how would you make use of it as the State of Texas says it is theirs. Surely you could part with a few pieces at a time. Great grandfather could have left it to you. So many tales, so little time, just where do you start to dig.
All of the treasures above have gone undiscovered so the tales say. Would you report the find so other seekers could stop their search? I say not as the Texas Antiquities Law is very clear on the matter. Now I must add another tale of gold and silver to be found to the list above.
I had set out to hide Krugerrand Run II in Baytown, however, before doing so I stopped by Roseland Park to check on a couple of my caches (now archived.) Off to Nc Foote Park where I would set up Krugerrand Run II. Into the woods I went, searching for the perfect spot to place my small container. To my surprise I realized, after reaching into my left pocket, that the small container was no longer there. How could I have lost it? It must be at Roseland Park because while there I had put the container in my pocket, I didn't want to leave it in the truck. Before leaving the parking area I sprayed myself with OFF and entered the ATV trail. I noticed an old pair of shoes just off the trail and a bridge in the distance just due south. I continued on my way to find my two caches, stopping once or twice to wipe the deet from my eyes. That must have been how lost the small container, when I removed my handkerchief from my pocket. I now will leave the task of finding the Lost Krugerrand to the lucky person that happens to see it while walking the ATV trails at Roseland Park. Feel free to share any information you may have on this forum.
