I have heard of it but don't know what it is. In my line of work it's 28 days on / 14 days off. Of course I got a Goverment job so I got it good, real good! I counted my work days one time and found my off days to be greater.

OK what is this turnaround all about? I have heard of it but don't know what it is. In my line of work it's 28 days on / 14 days off. Of course I got a Goverment job so I got it good, real good! I counted my work days one time and found my off days to be greater. Working in the refinery/chemical business like I do those units run 24/7/365. At some point the unit has to be taken down and completely emptied for repairs. Turnaround is the term used for that period of time that the unit is down for repairs. My unit makes approximately 2.3 millions (yea millions) pounds of plastic per 24 hour period. Equate that out for a 41 day turnaround and you will see how much lost production is incurred. During that time I was put on a straight day shift 5 am til 5pm but usually didn't get away until 7ish. Long hours no extra pay, (I'm salary),high stress, little time for the family and most important other than my family very very little time to grab some caches. 28 days on, 14 off sounds like the norm for nautical work, oil rigs, offshore work Caps etc. I work a rotating 12 hours shift 4 nites 3 off 3 days 1 off 3 nights 3 off 4 days 7 off then repeat. It's hard to get use to shift work and I think I'm just now getting the hang of it (26 years ;D) WTT-B2

Didn't they at least give you some comp days, WTT? I'm salaried too, but haven't had to work a big TA since I was hourly. Out at XOM, I think they either give comp days for salaried folks who work 7-12's during a turnaround, or after a week or so, they start getting a pay premium -- not really OT, but it helps. We have a couple of small turnarounds coming up later this year, then a big aromatics train TA in '07 or '08. I hope I don't get stuck on one of those.

Well I did get 1 day off after working all that and NO I don't expect any more comp days from that group at PPC....they suck. Our next one is scheduled for October '07 right in the middle of Elk hunting season WTT-B2
