OK, you are racing to a new cache for the FTF honor. To your surprise you find that a Muggle has signed the log. Should you log this find as a FTF or a STF? After all this person is not a cacher and was not looking for the cache when they found it. The FTF prize is still in the cache.

I would claim FTF since the Muggle wasnt a cacher. Interesting question. Has this happened to someone you know? That would be strange.

Not to me. I have seen caches signed by cachers that do not log online. One time I saw a cache that was signed by "Parks & Wildlife," I would think this was the local Game Warden. Anyway I think I would go with the STF, after all they did find it.

I was FTF on a letterbox in Memorial Park -- though I'm not sure if letterboxers keep up with that sort of thing. The lady who had placed it said it was one of her tougher puzzles and that folks had been emailing her for hints. I just stumbled across it because it was like 15 feet from a geocache. Since I use a stamp to sign my cache logs, I stamped the log for the letterbox. I didn't have a journal (or inkpad) to put the letterbox stamp in.

I think I would agree with this line of thought only if it was a muggle. I just found a cache signed by 2 geocachers and the log on GC.com hadn't been signed at the time I logged in. On GC I took 3rdTF since they were cachers and not muggles. As of today they still haven't posted on GC WTT-B2

Well, I think the person looking for the cache is the FTF, even if a muggle actually got there first and signed the log. You know, like if I just come out of a downtown shop and walk down the street and cross the set up finish line, they're not going to declare me the winner of the marathon! ........or would they.........hmmmmm........

But you said a Muggle. If it were another cacher, I would never try to take FTF. It is theirs. Not to me. I have seen caches signed by cachers that do not log online. GEOCACHE SITE - PLEASE READ
Congratulations, you've found it! Intentionally or not!
The above is taken from the Geocaching letter that accompanies most Geocaches. It would appear that the people at Geocaching.com are acknowledging that even a Muggle can find the cache and sign the log. The letter then gives the Geocaching Web Address so the Muggle can come and learn more about the activity.
Being that the Muggle may someday become a Geocacher I would leave the FTF honor for them to claim. But then what do I know; I haven’t got one find logged on Geocaching.com.

My husband aka SuperGenius does not log on line either. The only reason he has any finds on his account is because I logged them for him. Finally I decided if he wasn't gonna log I wasn't log for him. He likes caches by lakes where he's fishing especially if the cache is on the trail on the way to the lake. I on the other hand have a little competitive spirit in me and enjoy logging online. Sometimes I've got a pretty good story in me also. Pepper
